Tell me about the Ketogenic diet.

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate (HFLC) diet that shifts your body’s metabolism from mainly using carbs/sugars for energy, to primarily using fats. There’s a huge array of physiological and psychological benefits from the ketogenic diet, but here’s the short. When on the ketogenic diet, you enter a state known as ketosis.

What is ketosis?

Ketosis is a metabolic state where your body burns primarily fat for energy. For example, when you’re in ketosis, the energy required for breathing will cause your body to burn fat. Yes, the ketogenic diet allows you to burn fat, i.e belly fat, simply by breathing! 

It’s an amazing diet. Once you start you’ll reap the health benefits, including weight loss.

How do I follow the ketogenic diet?

The ketogenic diet is bar-none the most convenient, healthiest diet around. Actually, humans have (unknowingly) done it transiently for hundreds of thousands of years. Once you start, you’ll wonder we ever stopped!

Here’s what you do: eat a very low daily amount of carbs/sugar (<20 grams), eat a modest amount of protein, and eat a lot of fatty foods to satiety. Where health, weight loss, and reclaiming your life through eating is concerned; it really is that easy.

Wait a minute.. I thought eating fatty/oily foods was unhealthy? Well you’re not alone. In high school I thought Twizzlers were healthy because they’re low-fat. Why are fats healthy? That’s for another article.

Now! There are some specific challenges you’ll face when starting the ketogenic diet; specifically there’s an “induction” period between stopping carbs/sugar and getting your body into ketosis. There’s also carb-cravings that persist a couple weeks after starting keto; these include carb-dreams (I’ve had my fair share!).
